Ehou maki on Setsubun no hi

ehouzushiToday is once again Setsubun no hi. In Japan, Setsubun (節分) is the day before the beginning of each season. This year’s ehou (lucky direction) is a bit to the right of East-North-East.This year, I’m able  to taste ehou maki. Really …… a good one 🙂 While I’m at it, here are the ehou for the next four years:

  • 2009 – East-North-East
  • 2010 – West-South-West
  • 2011 – South-South-East
  • 2012 – North-North-West

This year, setsubun no hi (節分の日) falls on the 3rd of February (some years it’s on the 4th). It marks the start of the spring season or risshun (立春) in Japan according to the old lunar calendar. It’s not an official national holiday, but it is celebrated in ways all meant to drive away bad luck and bring in new, good luck. Most of the traditional rituals revolve around beans, because beans are considered to be very lucky. But there is another way of celebrating setsubun no hi, and that’s with a big, long, uncut sushi roll called ehou-maki. (more…)

Paperless Fax Machine

panasonic_fax

In this day and age, it’s kind of shocking that fax machines still exist. But exist they do, and some people insist on still using them. If you still need to deal with people who require faxes but don’t feel like dealing with the paper waste that comes with it, the new paperless Panasonic fax machine should keep you going through to the fax machine’s inevitable death.

You can send faxes using the built-in keypad to type out your messages, or you can send saved Word documents through. It’s a great idea on the surface, but not having even the option of using paper might not be that great. After all, what if you need to send a signed document? Or something you don’t have on your computer? Let’s just hope the entire fax machine thing just dies off entirely so we won’t have to worry about such things anymore.

Space Beer by Sapporo brewery…..

sapporo

For the first time, beer brewed totally from barley grown in space can be enjoyed on terra firma. The Japanese-owned Sapporo Brewery is one of the oldest beer producers in the nation, so it seems fitting that the company would want to diversify into the next frontier. Although the beer wasn’t actually brewed in space, the barley ingredient was grown there. Through a joint program between Sapporo, the Russian Academy of Science and Okayama University in Japan, the small amount of barley was grown on board the ISS as part of a project to research the cultivation of foodstuffs in Earth orbit.
