Okinawa Churaumi: World’s second largest Aquarium
The Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium located in Okinawa, Japan, is the world’s second largest aquarium behind the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta.
The main tank called the ‘Kuroshio Sea’ holds 7,500-cubic meters (1,981,290 gallons) of water and features the world’s second largest acrylic glass panel, measuring 8.2 meters by 22.5 meters with a thickness of 60 centimeters.
Whale sharks and manta rays are kept amongst many other fish species in the main tank.
On 16 June 2007 at 10:25 PM a manta ray was born at the aquarium after a gestation of 374 days.
The aquarium is one of very few that keep whale sharks in captivity, and is currently trying to breed them.

Total solar eclipse 2009 july 22
On Wednesday, 2009 July 22, a total eclipse of the Sun is visible from within a narrow corridor that traverses half of Earth. The path of the Moon’s umbral shadow begins in India and crosses through Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Myanmar and China. After leaving mainland Asia, the path crosses Japan’s Ryukyu Islands and curves southeast through the Pacific Ocean where the maximum duration of totality reaches 6 min 39 s. A partial eclipse is seen within the much broader path of the Moon’s penumbral shadow, which includes most of eastern Asia, Indonesia, and the Pacific Ocean.
The shadow of the moon is so large at this eclipse that even at sunrise the duration of totality is more than 3 minutes. Indeed this is a great eclipse. The shadow then very quickly moves across the breadth of India towards Arunachal Pradesh. The shadow spans a third of the entire path in India, 900 kilometres out of 2500 kms across entire India. The Eclipse intercept point has been planned over Taregna, a village 35 kms south of Patna. Taregna Math is the place where Aryabhatta – India’s astronomer & mathematician observed the skies and practised. Coincidently the eclipse centreline is passing right over this historical Patliputra town.

Love shaped watermelon in japan

Heart-shaped watermelons are just the latest twist on Japan’s love affair with the juicy green & red fruit. I’ve written about square watermelon (below) grown in special forms that make the fruit easier to pack, stack & store but these “lovely” melons turn that concept on its head while speaking to the heart.
The heart-shaped watermelons grown in Japan’s southernmost island of Kyushu by Mr. & Mrs. Hiroichi Kimura are anything but practical, but they don’t have to be. It took the Kimura’s three years to perfect their melons, which grow into fulsome heart shapes without the aid of special forms.
Still a small scale venture, only 20 of the special melons were shipped to buyers this year and their rarity is reflected in the price: 15,750 yen each – that works out to $160 per melon!
